The World Health Organisation has led the promotion of trial registration internationally (www.who.int/ictrp), and has called for national and regional trial registers to be established.
The UK Clinical Trials Register (UKCTG) has been created in response to this call:
- It collates trials that that are registered with an ISRCTN trial ID and that take place or have taken place in the UK.
- It includes trials from the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, a number of NHS Research & Development programmes such as the previously commissioned Regional and National R&D Programmes and the current Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme.
- It also includes trials from the NHS Trusts Clinical Trials Register (focusing on own account research in England) and trials that have been registered individually by charity, industry and NHS Trusts sponsors/funders.
The UKCTG is updated daily.
The development of this UK trial dataset will be guided by an Advisory Group chaired by Sir Iain Chalmers, Coordinator of DUETs - the Database of Uncertainties of the Effects of Treatments (www.duets.nhs.uk). DUETs is assembling uncertainties about the effects of treatments identified through patients', carers' and clinicians' questions; research recommendations in reports of systematic reviews and clinical guidelines; and ongoing research, whether systematic reviews in preparation, or new 'primary' studies such as the trial records included in the UKCTG.
