Current Controlled Trials newsletter

Welcome to the last edition of our quarterly newsletter for 2012. We would like to thank all our users who have provided feedback throughout the year and helped us to improve our services. We look forward to receiving your support in the coming year.

Wishing everyone a very happy holiday season.

Advisory group

We have appointed a new advisory group with whom we look forward to working on the future development of trial registration and related publishing services. Our new members bring along a wide range of expertise and we are proud to have gained the participation of such experienced and prominent scientists for our advisory group.

Advocacy

We have introduced a new advocacy page which includes a downloadable poster, wallpaper and other useful resources. We encourage our users to take advantage of these resources to help promote clinical trial registration amongst their peers.

UK Clinical Trials Gateway (UKCTG)

UKCTG Logo
The UKCTG ran a survey to gather views from the public and patients on how effective the UKCTG website is for people to access information on clinical trials they may choose to participate in. The survey results concluded that the public and patients regard the current UKCTG website as a useful tool for accessing unbiased, accurate and up-to-date information on clinical trials. A majority of respondents would recommend the current website to other people, and there are many constructive comments suggesting improvements to the website so that it can be used interactively, marketed effectively and reach a wider UK population. More than 50% of the respondents to the survey have asked to be kept informed or take an active role in supporting the development of the website. In the coming months, based on the feedback received, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) aims to improve the UKCTG website.

CCT offers customized reports for research

A recent article published in Trials discusses trends in registration of non-commercial randomized clinical trials and the feasibility of using trial registries to monitor the number of trials. It was noted that although it is feasible to monitor trends, accessing the data can be difficult and complicated. At CCT we provide customized reports that facilitate research on trial registration. Contact us to discuss assistance with your research project.

Publish negative results

Journal of Negative Results in Biomedicine
At BioMed Central we are working to improve transparency in clinical research and reduce publication bias. However, a vast amount of research remains unpublished, particularly results which are inconclusive or do not support the proposed hypothesis – negative results. As well as negative results, incomplete results from stopped or abandoned trials can prove informative in subsequent trial design and research, and will help reduce wasteful duplication of research if made more routinely published in peer-reviewed journals. To submit your scientifically sound research, regardless of the study's outcomes, please visit Journal of Negative Results in BioMedicine, Trials and BMC Research Notes.
