| Participants - inclusion criteria | 1. Aged 12 - 17 years (inclusive) 2. Presentation with self harm 3. Referral for a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) assessment |
| Participants - exclusion criteria | 1. Poor English 2. Gross reality distortion due to psychosis or inebriation 3. Immediate risk of violence or suicide 4. Known moderate to severe learning disability 5. Admission to psychiatric in-patient unit |

| Interventions | Therapeutic Assessment (TA) versus assessment as usual. There is no structured intervention after the initial assessment. This is a study of the assessment process. Participants will be followed up by relevant community teams and recommendations will be made about the optimal management. |
