Date ISRCTN assigned18/07/2002
Local reference number(s)H0628
Public titleAn evaluation of the use of computer assisted learning in the teaching of musculoskeletal examination skills
Scientific title
AcronymN/A
Disease/condition/study domainArthritis
Study hypothesisIn order to optimise the treatment of people with arthritis and related conditions it is important that all doctors have the necessary skills to examine and assess joints. In the past teaching of these skills has not been a priority in medical schools and there is a need for it to be improved, despite financial and staffing restrictions. Rheumatology nurse specialists are increasingly involved in the assessment and treatment of patients and there is a similar need for effective but efficient training in this group. The aim of our study is to test whether a multimedia computer package is of value in helping medical students, GP trainees and nurse specialists in learning to assess the shoulder and knee joints. Our findings will also be a guide to whether it is worth developing similar computer based packages in the future.
