1. To ascertain whether peer-leaders can be recruited and trained to reduce take-up of smoking among their peers and encourage those peers to maintain their non-smoking status
2. To ascertain whether those peer-leaders may also impact on smoking cessation among peers
3. To assess the costs of the intervention against a range of outcomes using a 'costs & consequences' approach
4. To undertake a process evaluation and produce an intervention manual

Smoking behaviour of Year 8 pupils, followed up for 2 years
|

Primary outcome measure(s)
|
Change in smoking prevalence among the 'high risk' group (experimenters, ex-smokers and less than weekly smokers), change in prevalence in the year group. Smoking prevalence is operationalised as that proportion having smoking in the last 7 days.

Secondary outcome measure(s)
|
Perception of norms regarding adolescent smoking, intention to quit.
