Participants - inclusion criteria Patients on the waiting list for an appointment with the named cardiothoracic surgeon, will be identified by the research nurse. On average, five patients are referred to the Consultant Surgeon for consultation regarding revascularisation surgery, each week. To allow for patients who decline to participate in the study, the study will aim to recruit 20 patients over an eight-week period. Mapping postcodes on to available deprivation indicators will identify the socio economic background of the sample. A subsequent full-scale study would be stratified to ensure enhanced representation from patients living in areas of socio economic deprivation.

Interventions The pilot study will involve a randomised controlled trial, comparing the experiences and outcomes among patients receiving an audiotape of their revascularisation consultation with patients who do not receive an audiotape of their consultation.
Primary outcome measure(s) Assessment of spontaneous recall through use of open-ended questions to ask the patient to report what the surgeon said during the consultation.
