Participants - inclusion criteria Patients with mechanical low back pain of at least 4 weeks duration but less than 6 months, aged between 18 and 60, declared medically fit by their GP to undertake the exercise and who had consulted one of the GPs taking part in the study.

Interventions Active intervention: A programme of eight group exercise classes of 1 h each, spread over 4 weeks with up to 10 participants in each class. The programme was led by a physiotherapist and incorporated cognitive behavioural principles and was conducted in a community setting. It included stretching, low impact aerobic and strengthening exercises and simple education messages.

Control group: Patients continued under the care of their doctor.
