Study hypothesis The aim is to investigate the effects on the cardiovascular system of two, commonly-used, blood pressure-lowering treatments following a recent stroke. The objective is to establish the effects of the thiazide diuretic, Bendrofluazide, and the angiotensin Lisinopril

Participants - inclusion criteria 1. The onset of first ischaemic stroke between 2 and 8 weeks prior to randomisation.
2. A mean brachial blood pressure (BP) level measured on 2 different occasions a week apart between 140/90 mmHg and 180/110 mmHg.
3. The presence of sinus rhythm.
4. Age >18 years
